The Fiddown Chapel, now a mausoleum to the Ponsonby and Briscoe families, houses a number of memorial stones to our Briscoe family.
Although not captured here (but documented by Carrigan in his 1981 history of the Diocese of Ossory, Kilkenny), there was a memorial horizontal slab in the Fiddown graveyard bearing the inscription:
"Here lyeth the body of Edward Briscoe of Crofton in the County of Cumberland in England, who departed this life the 20th day of July anno Dom 1709 and in the 58th year of his age"
We can confidently say that this testifies to the Cumberland origins of our Briscoes.
In his paper on the mausoleum, Michael O'Donnell tells us that: '..different branches of the [Briscoe] family lived at Tybroughney, Garnarea and Three Bridges/Tinvane in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The monument stones below refer, in the main, to the Cloncunny/Willmount area.." This has been identified as "our" branch of the Briscoe family.
